Is it Important to Seal Pavers?
In short, Yes! While sealing your pavers is not absolutely necessary, it is important for maintaining their look and health. If you choose not to seal, their look will begin to change over time, greatly diminishing their appearance. Colors will begin to fade due to wear and sun exposure. The smooth top layer will slowly wear away leaving them unprotected. Being a porous material, this leaves them open to absorbing stains. Unsealed pavers are also more likely to have weeds and ant mounds in the joints. This is because the sand that is used when installing pavers does not protect against such things. Once they are sealed, the sand joints will harden, thereby making it harder for weeds to grow through. It will also protect against settling due to sand loss in the joints.
Provide UV Protection
Sealer offers UV protection against Florida’s harsh sun and environment; it is like applying sunscreen to your skin. In addition, sealer provides a protective barrier against all types of stains, such as motor oil, suntan lotions by the pool, drink spills, and much more. Stains can be removed more easily on a sealed driveway, as long as they’re removed quickly, because they tend to sit on the surface of the pavers.
Protect Against Mold and Algae
Florida’s humidity is a breeding ground for mold and algae. Unsealed pavers are the perfect porous surface for the mold to make a comfy home. Sealing will make them less porous, thereby inhibiting mold and algae growth on the surface. Some shady areas may still accumulate mold and algae, but the sealer will make cleaning it up a lot easier, and will protect against dirt and grime.
Enhance the Color of Your Pavers
For many, the biggest draw to sealing their pavers is for the color enhancement. Naturally, most are drawn to the beautiful sheen that is evident, as well as the deep tones of their colors once they are sealed. Sealing does not change their color, but instead makes them look as if they were wet. The sheen truly enhances their natural beauty. Keep in mind that pavers need to be re-sealed every two to three years. All pavers are different, so this will depend on the amount of sun, wear, and rain in your area.
The Bottom Line
Sealing your pavers will:
· Provide long-lasting luster
· Inhibit Algae, Mold, and Weed growth
· Provide protective barrier against stains and weather
· Seal joints to eliminate stray sand, reduce weed growth, and prevent paver movement
